The check interval is how frequently a monitor tests a service. A shorter interval (say, 30 seconds) detects outages faster — lowering MTTD — but runs more checks; a longer interval is lighter but slower to notice problems.
Interval is a trade-off between detection speed and cost, and is often tied to pricing plans. Critical, customer-facing services usually warrant the shortest interval available.
