Never let an expired certificate take your site offline.

Spectra watches your SSL certificates and domain registrations around the clock, and alerts you at 60, 30, 14, and 7 days before expiry. So a forgotten renewal never becomes a 3am incident.

SSL certificate expiry timeline

SSL certificate + domain — two threats, one monitor.

Every SSL & Domain monitor checks both your certificate and your domain registration — because both can expire and both can take your site offline.

SSL certificate expiry

We check your certificate's expiry date against the live TLS handshake — not cached DNS data — so you always know the exact days remaining on the certificate your visitors actually see.

  • Expiry date from live TLS handshake
  • Days remaining calculated in real time
  • Alerts at 60 / 30 / 14 / 7 days
  • Works with any CA — Let's Encrypt, DigiCert, Sectigo, etc

Domain name expiry

An expired domain is worse than an expired SSL — your site disappears entirely and can be registered by someone else. We monitor your WHOIS record and alert before your domain lapses.

  • WHOIS lookup on every check
  • Supports all major TLDs
  • Alerts at 60 / 30 / 14 / 7 days
  • Works even if auto-renew is configured

Certificate validity checks

Beyond expiry, we verify the certificate is valid — not just present. A cert can be installed but misconfigured, self-signed, or issued for a different domain. We catch all of these.

  • Chain of trust validation
  • Domain name mismatch detection
  • Self-signed certificate detection
  • Revoked certificate alerts

Why SSL monitoring matters.

SSL and domain expiry can happen silently. Spectra makes sure you're always one step ahead.

Without Spectra

  • Browser shows security warnings
  • Revenue and trust are at risk
  • SEO rankings can be affected
  • Emergency renewals and downtime

With Spectra

  • 60-days early warning
  • 30-days reminder alert
  • 14-days escalation alert
  • 7-days final alert before expiry

We validate what Actually Matters.

Spectra goes beyond the expiry date to confirm the certificate your visitors actually receive is valid and trusted.

  • Days until expiry
  • Full certificate chain
  • Issuer & hostname match
  • Revocation & validity status

A stress-free renewal, every time.

This is what the SSL renewal process looks like when Spectra is watching. No surprises. No scrambling. Just a task completed during normal hours.

  1. 1

    First alert lands in Slack

Spectra sends the first expiry notice. Your team reads "Renew SSL for checkout" to the upcoming sprint — no urgency, no stress.

  2. 2

    Reminder — renewal is assigned

Second alert fires. An engineer is assigned the renewal task. Most CAs accept renewals this far out, so there's no rush.

  3. 3

    Certificate renewed — incident averted

Engineer renews the certificate. Spectra detects the new expiry date within minutes and updates the dashboard. Alert status clears automatically.

  4. 4

Site stays online. Users never notice.

No browser warnings. No blocked transactions. No emergency calls. Just a routine renewal that happened during business hours — exactly as it should.

A stress-free SSL renewal handled during business hours

SSL checks don't need to run every minute.

Certificate expiry dates only change when a cert is renewed or a domain is transferred. Spectra uses dedicated SSL check intervals — separate from your uptime check interval — so you're not burning unnecessary checks.

Every 24 hours

For low-risk domains with long expiry windows and auto-renew enabled. Low resource usage.

Every 12 hours

The recommended default. Balanced between detection speed and efficiency. Catches same-day renewals.

Every 6 hours

For critical domains or certificates nearing expiry. Fastest detection of renewal or failure.

Alert timing within threshold

At selected threshold Alert when days-remaining crosses 60/30/14/7
24 hours before threshold Alert one day before reaching the threshold
12 hours before threshold Half-day early warning
6 hours before threshold Tightest warning window

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions teams ask us

How does Spectra check my SSL certificate?

We perform a live TLS handshake to the certificate your visitors actually receive, then read its expiry date, issuer, chain, and hostname — not a cached record.

Which alert thresholds can I configure?

By default we alert at 60, 30, 14, and 7 days before expiry, and you can fully customise those thresholds per monitor.

Will I get an alert if my certificate is valid but misconfigured?

Yes. Beyond expiry we check the chain of trust, issuer and hostname match, self-signed and revoked certificates — so misconfigurations are caught too.

My domain has auto-renew enabled — do I still need domain monitoring?

Yes. Auto-renew can silently fail (expired card, registrar issue). Spectra confirms the renewal actually happened rather than assuming it did.

Is SSL monitoring available on the Free plan?

Yes — SSL and domain expiry monitoring is included on every plan, including Free.
